Reveo has developed a strategy, the Edison Technology Portfolio (ETP), to spin out subsidiaries that focus exclusively on particular technology applications. The ETP strategy is named after Thomas Edison because the founder, Dr. Faris, considers the famous, most prolific inventor as his role model and wants to emulate him by creating an environment that will provide inventions and innovations that make a significant positive impact on humanity.
The Five Tenets of ETP Strategy
The ETP Strategy involves selecting a portfolio of significant technologies that will be developed and introduced to the marketplace. The selection process is based on the following set of carefully thought-out tenets:
- Each ETP technology must represent a significant solution for humanity.
- Each ETP technology must represent a new frontier in science and technology.
- The ETP technology must have multi-billion-dollar potential.
- Before seeking equity financing to develop an ETP technology, Reveo must engage in internal R&D activity to demonstrate the feasibility of the technology and to minimize technological risk.
- When the previous four criteria are satisfied, the ETP technology will be spun out as a separate company that focuses on that technology and its markets. Equity investors are invited to participate at this stage.
The ETP Strategy in Practice
Many technologies have been identified and selected for inclusion in the ETP. Four of them have been spun out as independent companies after satisfying the criteria above. These technologies are stereoscopic imaging (VRex), fuel cells (eVionyx), cholesteric liquid crystals (Chelix Technologies), and optical communication components (PetaComm). Reveo is continuing to develop many technologies that will be spun out as independent companies in the coming years.
Reveo believes that this strategy will foster innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship. Each subsidiary is empowered to make its own decisions, thereby increasing efficiency, but has the benefit of Reveo's support. This strategy promotes tighter focus on specific markets and leverages the value of the company.
